The Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice, University of
Nairobi, is the largest department at the School of Pharmacy and is
comprised of a diversified group of academic staff, technical staff,
administrative staff, postgraduate students and research assistants. The
Department encompasses staff with interests and emphasis in the field
of Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery, Nanotechnology, Clinical Pharmacy,
Pharmacy Law and Ethics, Community Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Microbiology
and Social and Administrative Pharmacy.
Our members of staff are deeply committed to achieving excellence in
our teaching and research missions. Our undergraduate programme show
cases several disciplines within the profession of pharmacy and provides
our students with knowledge and expertise that prepares them adequately
for professional practice. We at the department lay utmost emphasis on
interdisciplinary team-work, to impart lifelong education of a well
rounded pharmacist. It is our earnest endeavour to equip our students
with professional ethics and appreciation of the value of service to
their profession and society.
Currently, we offer postgraduate studies in Clinical Pharmacy and
Industrial Pharmacy but we soon intend to launch more postgraduate
programmes that meet the market demand in the field of pharmacy.
Our Clinical Pharmacy staffs are engaged in teaching clinical pharmacy
practice to our students at various hospital sites within the country,
namely Kenyatta National and Referral Hospital, Mbagathi Hospital,
Karatina District Hospital, Naivasha District Hospital, Coast General
Hospital and Kisii level V hospital.
The Department’s staff has recently set up collaborations with local
pharmaceutical manufacturing companies in Nairobi to provide consultancy
on pharmaceutical formulation development and production processing.
Our post graduate students training in Industrial pharmacy are involved
with the local pharmaceutical industries during their industrial
rotations for hands on experience.
The Pharmacy Practice and Drug Information Unit (PPDIU) is a model
community pharmacy housed within the department that caters as an active
learning site for our students.
Further more, we take pride in the accomplishments of our staff and
students, not only in research, but in all aspects of academic life. We
applaud the recent award of grant, fellowship and scholarships to our
staff members and postgraduate students.
We also greatly value inputs from the consumer of our products and
